Simple, Practical Tips for International Students
If you’re planning to apply to U.S. universities this fall, summer is the perfect time to prepare — calmly and effectively. You don’t need to do everything at once, but small, consistent steps now will make the application season much smoother.
Here’s how to use your summer wisely:
1) Read Books in English
Reading regularly — especially fiction, essays, or memoirs — helps you improve vocabulary, sentence structure, and comprehension. Choose books that interest you, and try to read a little every day. It will make writing your personal statement and preparing for English exams much easier.
2) Practice Writing
Start journaling or writing short essays in English. Reflect on your experiences, goals, or challenges — these ideas may later become part of your college application. The more you write, the more confident you’ll feel when it’s time to submit your personal statement.
3) Prepare for Exams
If you plan to take the SAT, ACT, TOEFL, or IELTS, summer is the best time to study. Set a schedule, review sample questions, and take practice tests. Even 30–60 minutes a day can make a big difference.
4) Organize Your Documents
Start gathering your academic transcripts, certificates, and awards. If needed, get them translated into English. Make a folder (digital or physical) where you keep everything — it’ll save time later.
5) Explore Extracurriculars
Use the summer to do something meaningful outside of school. Volunteer, start a small project, help in your community, or join an online course. These experiences show initiative and help shape your story as an applicant.
6) Talk to Someone Who’s Been There
If you know someone who studied in the U.S., ask them about their experience. What helped them most? What would they do differently? Real stories can give you clarity and motivation.
You don’t need to be perfect — just proactive. A few hours each week spent reading, writing, and preparing will help you feel ready and confident when application season begins.
